What people call a UK business travel visa is usually the Standard Visitor Visa. But the UK just made things more complicated.

The UK has changed its border system, starting 25 February 2026, which means most visitors now need permission before they travel. This includes people from America, the EU, and Canada. In short, while once you could turn up at the border with a passport, there is now an extra step – the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

• Two: You plan to leave the UK at the end of your visit. They want to see ties to your home country. Employment letter. Property ownership. Family.
• Three: You have a clear reason for the trip. A vague reference to ‘business meetings’ won’t work. They want specifics. Quarterly board review. Client presentation. Equipment installation.

Vague meeting descriptions

Don’t write ‘business meetings’. Write ‘Q1 board review’ or ‘finalising merger terms with XYZ Ltd’. Make things as specific as possible, leaving no room for doubt.

Inconsistent evidence

Bank statements must match the stated salary. If you earn £3,000 a month, the statements should show that coming in regularly. A one-off £10,000 deposit looks wrong and immediately triggers a red flag.

Tax implications

Spend 183 days in the UK in a tax year, and you become a UK tax resident even if you’re on a visitor visa.

Spend more than 60 workdays in the UK, and your UK entity might need to operate a shadow payroll. Talk to a tax adviser before sending someone for extended visits.

Passport renewal trap

Get a new passport, and your ETA becomes invalid. You need to apply again before your next trip. Same with eVisas. Update the UKVI account with new passport details, or the airline will deny boarding.
